Bittorrent Heroes NIN Sell Their Instruments on Ebay

Trent Reznor playing one of the guitars he is now selling
Nine Inch Nails and especially the band’s front man Trent Reznor have won the hearts of p2p users all over the world for good the moment they decided to release their albums for free via BitTorrent and share their music with their public without charging anything. The outcome was at that time like slap to the music industry’s attitude and approach to file sharing – at the beginning of the year P2PON was writing: “the album “Ghosts I-IV” by the famous industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails not only sold more than $1.6 million within a week after the release (many of which due to voluntary donations of $5 per download) but was nominated for the 51st annual Grammy awards. And all that was achieved with an album the members of the band voluntarily released on torrents.”
Now the fans of Nine Inch Nails have the rare chance of actually owing the instruments their idols played lived and in studio these years as the guys who have always defined the conventionalism of our times in music as well as in their general attitude have decided to sell their equipment on Ebay. According to P2P-Blog, NIN has put up for auction around 20 guitars. The band explained the reasons for giving up their gear:
“This is the equipment from the Nine Inch Nails touring Gear and studio rig that we are no longer in need of. (…) We will be listing hundreds of items over the next several weeks such as guitars, keyboards, amplifiers, drums, staging, anvil cases, cables, rack/outboard gear, guitar effects, pedal boards. So keep checking in on our auctions.”
This is about continuity since Reznor & Co. have always had a close relationship with their fans as The Guardian describes:
“Nine Inch Nails have long enjoyed an interactive relationship with fans. Reznor has given away albums, leaked professionally shot live footage, and was for a long time one of music’s most candid Twitterers. If Nine Inch Nails are no longer using some of their equipment, it seems they would rather see it in the hands of fans than gathering dust in a warehouse.”

NIN Trent Reznor Answers Your Questions

For Trent it has become a habit to maintain an open relationship with the general public through the Interent
The always inventive Trend Reznor, Nine Inch Nails frontman but also recently proven digital-music visionary will participate in Digg’s next Dialogg session and already a set of burning questions eagerly collected by users of the social news site await for him.
The session will be unfolding like this: Reznor is going to answer the questions that accumulated most Diggs and it’s already clear that P2P will be at the core of them. Here’s a taste of what has queued up waiting for the NIN’s leader to answer:
“Trent – you’ve embraced Creative Commons and file sharing, but your business model (aside from touring) still primarily involves selling music either digitally or physically. Why haven’t you embraced advertising as a business model, e.g. placing ads on your torrent tracker? Why let Pirate Bay take all the ad revenue you deserve? Furthermore, why aren’t you building a brand new record label based on a modern business model?”
“What is the most embarrassing song on your iPod?”
You’ve got one more day to propose new questions and vote the ones already posted so hurry up and find out the views of a man who changed the face of music industry and music creation as well.
NIN Allows Free Download of Upcoming Tour Sampler

NIN has done it again! With their already well-known approach towards the music industry the guys managed once more to pleasantly surprise their fans and make major labels seem…redundant. It all started when the band noticed how the music industry would make a habit out of using its fans’ loyalty to charge them even more; So, NIN frontman Trent Reznor broke free from any such “attachments”.
After succeeding in getting those voracious record labels out of the way and thus increase the interaction and connection to their fans, NIN set up the pace for a new breed of artistic community.
Starting with “Ghosts Vol 1” (of 4) to its latest offering of “The Slip,” NIN has been breaking barriers in terms of music distribution.
Fans are invited to enjoy a free NIN EP download including tracks from the lineup of its forthcoming “Lights In the Sky” tour.
Their blog says:
I am proud to announce the final personnel lineup of nine inch nails for the foreseeable future. We’ve added, we’ve subtracted and we’ve wound up with unquestionably the strongest lineup I’ve EVER had. Joining me onstage will be Robin Finck, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Freese and Justin Meldal-Johnsen.
We’ve been working on something really special for these shows and so far I couldn’t be happier with the results. We’ll be revealing some live performances shortly here on nin.com – in the meantime, we’ve posted some photos from rehearsals up on Flickr here.
Meanwhile, I assume some of you may not be entirely familiar with the acts I’ve chosen to join us on various legs of this tour, so we’ve compiled a sampler EP for you. CLICK HERE to download this for free. If you like what you hear, be sure to show up early to the show (and please remember to support them by purchasing their music, if so inclined).
Best,
TR
This EP puts out five high quality, DRM-free, songs: a place to bury strangers, does it offend you, yeah? crystal castles, deerhunter, and nine inch nails. Additionally, the offering gathers cover art, avatars, wallpapers, and more.
Trent Reznor proves again his straightforward but innovative thinking which will only bring him appreciation from his fans (and not only). Perhaps there’s something here to learn even for the self-contained record labels.
Artists Stand up for High-fidelity Audio
Filed under: Announcements & Events, Entertainment Industry, Movies, MP3, Digital Audio & Games
As the digital era with its mighty ruler – the Mp3 are swallowing everything around leaving no room for other contenders, artists are coming together to have their say in this and save high-fidelity audio formats. Adhering to “la resistance” are artists like Neil Young, Trent Reznor (NIN), John Mellencamp and T Bone Burnett.
Burnett (photo right) has done more than oppose the death of high fidelity formats – he founded Code, with which he intends to set standards that would guarantee top quality sound. According to Rolling Stone, the first album to be released by Code is John Mellencamp’s Life, Death, Love and Freedom (produced by Burnett), and is due on July 15th. The album will be offered in a special package containing a standard CD and an audio-only DVD with superior sound quality compatible with any standard DVD player. Additionally, the package will also “throw in” iPod-playable AAC files ripped straight from the masters, which according to Burnett offers better quality sound.
Further on, Burnett seems confident about his venture and not at all “intimidated” in his initiative by the ever growing popularity of iPods. Even with past negative examples of better-than CD formats such as SACD failing, the experienced producer and musician relies on the impact the superior quality of sound will ultimately have on the public – “Nobody knew they wanted high-definition television until they saw it,” and calls on fellow artists to give up being passive about it “We need musicians to stand up for pure sound. It’s unthinkable that we’re still hung up on this 25-year-old technology of CDs
Blu-ray discs, on the other hand, are preferred by Young (a well-known opposer to digital sound) as they have a larger storage space than even DVDs: “CD quality is very low-resolution, just a step above MP3s” (…) “That was a crime, to make that a standard for so many years” said the artist.
