This years’ BitTorrent scene looks very promising in both terms of tracker activity and freshness, with plenty of new trackers having emerged on the Web since the month of January. The following is a brief description of some of the best newly opened general content trackers out there.
- The first general tracker worth mentioning is SeedBits.org. Since its first apparition on February 15, SeedBits has already indexed a surprising number of more than 750 active torrents and numbers about 360 registered users. Despite being labeled as a general tracker, the majority of torrents introduced so far are TV releases, including both popular TV episodes and XviD movies. The great thing about this tracker is its straightforward and neat layout, designed to keep things as simple as possible. Speed-wise, SeedBits stands out from the pack by providing seedbox-hosting support for all content, so you should expect high-speed download rates using a seedbox. The only drawbacks appear to be the wait times on new torrents.
The sign-up link for SeedBits is http://seedbits.org/signup.php.
Bullet-Torrents.com is another promising name on our list. Accounting for 300 members so far and listing 89? active torrents, Bullet-Torrents has a fresh look and is fairly easy to navigate. Launched less than two months ago, the tracker compensates for the low torrent count in terms of content quality. Another plus is its IRC channel, and its own private network at irc.bullet-torrents.com/#bullet-torrents. Although it seriously needs new uploaders to grow into a popular resource, Bullet-Torrents shows some good potential, and is definitely worth checking out.
You can access Bullet-Torrents’ signup page following this link: http://www.bullet-torrents.com/signup.php
Another tracker you should check out is the second version of Pirate-Bytes.net. Despite the limited proportions of its torrent database, Pirate-Bytes is a good resource of quality and diversified content, including new XviD movie apparitions, game ISOs and large packs. Pirate-Bytes also allows for high-speed downloads, about 9.5 MB/s in average.
The signup page for Pirate-Bytes can be accessed following this link: http://pirate-bytes.net/signup.php
Opened in November under a different domain name, SmokeIT.ro (a Romanian tracker) looks lively, with an impressive 1,350 active torrent count and 7,415 members. The tracker’s torrent database is diversified, with all content being currently set to freeleech. SmokeIT has a very appealing interface, which corroborates tasteful design with simplified, intuitive navigation features. SmokeIT’s signup page can be accessed following this link: http://smokeit.ro/signup.php
AreaFile.com is another general content Romanian/English tracker worth mentioning. It currently lists 29,553 members and 900 active torrents that seem to have it all: from XXX to DVDRs/XviD movies to applications and music, it’s all there waiting to be downloaded. AreaFile.com seems to have started out on the right foot, comprising a large number of uploaders, a decent peer count on most of the torrents and allowing for high download speeds. The sign-up link for AreaFile is http://www.areafile.com/signup.php.
Last, but not least, is TorrentZone.net. This general tracker shows very good activity, having drawn 3,193 members and including 769 torrents since its launch in February. The torrent database is quite diversified, although primarily oriented towards XviD and HD content. In addition to being well-populated, TorrentZone’s torrent list is refreshed on a constant basis and the tracker offers each new member 10GB upload credit at signup and possibility to connect through a https tracker.

U.S. Federal Communications Commission wants to keep up with its promises to expand its ways of helping consumers and has introduced new tools to the Broadband.gov Web site meant to allow users measure their broadband speeds or to report unavailability of broadband. The agency will gather information to study broadband performance and availability and will protect consumers' privacy.
On Thursday the FCC said it has added the Consumer Broadband Test and the Broadband Dead Zone Report features to Broadband.gov.
"Transparency empowers consumers, promotes innovation and investment, and encourages competition," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski pointed out in his announcement. "The FCC's new digital tools will arm users with real-time information about their broadband connection and the agency with useful data about service across the country. By informing consumers about their broadband service quality, these tools help eliminate confusion and make the market work more effectively."
With the help of Consumer Broadband Test broadband quality indicators like speed and latency can be easily analyzed due to two known broadband testing tools: the Ookla Speed Test and the Network Diagnostic Tool, using the Measurement Lab (M-Lab) platform. According to the FCC, other broadband testing tools will be added in the future. Furthermore, for those interested, a mobile version of the app, the first mobile app released by the organization, can be found in the Apple and Android app stores.
U.S. residents have other options to report on broadband availability like e-mailing the FCC at fccinfo@fcc.gov or call 1-888-CALL-FCC.
The FCC will use the data gathered from the tools to analyze broadband performance and availability, the agency said. , the FCC said.
