WinMX Review

winmx reviewWinMX is a p2p file sharing application created by Frontcode Technologies and running on Windows operating systems. This program will only share Audio and Video files, by default but once the proper configuration is made, it can share almost every type of file. WinMX comes with file-size limitation- files larger than 2GB must be split into smaller chunks if you want to share them.

WinMX includes built-in Chat function allowing users to host chatrooms. Actually, you’ll have rooms destined to chatting, others to swapping files, and some which permit both actions. Usually there are approximately between 1500 and 2000 1000 chatrooms open. You are also allowed to message another user through the Private Message function.

At first WinMX was a p2p software that connected to OpenNap servers (which it can still do). The thing with these servers is that they let users connect to a broader userbase and consequently obtain many more search results. Two advantages for running OpenNap is the ability to have a permanent list of friends called a hotlist and the ability to share an unlimited number of files.

Installing WinMX is quickly and implies a start-up wizard that lets you select your connection speed and the files that you want to put out for sharing. Once launched it’s possible that you’ll get lost among all those buttons appearing on the screen – the interface is not the simplest-looking around. However, you won’t need a manual to use WinMX’s basic features. There are buttons place at the top highlighting the main functions and areas – Network, Shared Files, Chat, Search, Hotlist, Transfers, and Bandwidth.

Another good thing about WinMX is that it doesn’t contain spyware.

Strong Points: Offers fast, abundant search results; contains no spyware; integrates chat tool with music search.

Weak Points: Zero tech support; unfriendly interface; no Mac version.

Update: real-time and forum-based volunteer tech support.

Conclusion: why it may take you a little while to get accustomed with WinMX’s functionality, with a bit a patience you’ll come to appreciate what it has to offer.
