Virgin Media Testing New File Sharing Detecting System

In November 2009 we reported that new technology could be adopted to monitor illegal file sharing in UK. Now one of UK’s leading broadband providers, Virgin Media, has announced that it could soon reveal new technology that aims at combating file sharing.

This deep packet inspection technology (DPI) the company is flirting with is provided provided by Detica and as reported by Times, while it can be used in identifying the types of files Internet users are downloading it can’t be used by companies to pry into their customers’ online activity and grab IP addresses.

The technology “allows us to understand the exact nature of unlawful traffic on our network,” said a spokesman for Virgin Media but we have all learned by now that credibility is such an expensive word.
