P2PON Recommends – “Orphan”
Each week we’ll be presenting a film and providing you with a link where you can download it and watch it in good quality.
OK, we didn’t set the goal of writing only about films that require firstly a good stomach, but it so happens that this week’s movie also belongs to the horror genre…partially; it can also be classified as a thriller/mystery/drama flick. ‘Orphan’ debuted in this week’s ‘Top 10 Most Downloaded Movies via BitTorrent’ on #2.
Dark Castle finally releases a good film and that’s probably because they got back to the roots with this one. While it doesn’t lack the clichés usually met in this kind of thriller flicks it also comes with a nice twist at the end (I won’t reveal it) and, what really pulls it out of the mediocre productions of its genre, wonderful performances.
Plot Summary for ‘Orphan’
Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John Coleman (Peter Sarsgaard) are a troubled young couple not healed yet from the loss of their baby who adopt from the local orphanage a 9-year-old Russian girl, Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), who seems well-mannered and very talented (she makes a good first impression with her painting). But the arrival of the little girl in the Coleman family means the arrival of pure evil as things gradually develop a dark and morbid tone with the other two kids in the family Max (Aryana Engineer) and Daniel (Jimmy Bennett) being the first to suffer from it.
The Movie
Any movie built around an evil-child must have a solid evil-child character if it wants any good to come out of it. This one definitely does – Isabelle Fuhrman does an incredible job playing Esther – one of the best evil kids ever emanating malefic intelligence and unscrupulousness through her eyes and truly chilling calm! An equally great performance comes from Aryana Engineer (hearing-impaired in real-life) playing born-deaf Max, the youngest of the Colemans. Since we’re at the performance section – it would be sinful not to remind the brilliant interpretation Vera Farmiga gives to Kate Coleman’s character – a mourning mother haunted by nightmares with her stillborn, recovering from an alcoholic past with the help of psychiatric therapy and dealing with a husband that doubts every word in her sayings (sometimes even too much).
Director Jaume Collet-Serra and screenwriter David Johnson managed to deliver a 'killer kid' horror film that can still surprise and with a very good casting.
Enjoy ‘Orphan’ (but not with your kids around!)
