Mininova Surviving Despite Adding Filters?
While lately Pirate Bay seemed to get all the media attention due to the trial and then the news about its acquisition by Global Gaming Factory, other major file sharing sites experience tough times as well. One of these is the popular Mininova which awaits the verdict of the trial started at the beginning of June.
As pressures from copyright holders increase, many sites dedicated to sharing content online are forced to resort to drastic changes – Mininova apparently had no other choice than to filter the files it links to:
"(L)ikely infringing video files referred to by torrents are checked by a third party content recognition system. If the system finds that the file corresponds to unauthorized content, we remove and block the torrent that refers to this file on Mininova."
Though many thought two months ago that the move would practically kill the site, Mininova is alive and kicking. However, it remains to be seen if after the verdict the users (whose percentage has been slightly dropping lately) will be satisfied with less content and stay loyal to the site or will migrate to other similar file sharing websites that prefer a more outlawish existence.
Sites such as Youtube, also agreed to filter their uploads.
