Mozilla is uphill and enjoying every download on the way. The company has proudly announced that its popular offspring – the browser Firefox, (recently launched in version 3.5) has gone beyond the impressive milestone of 1 billion lifetime downloads.

We’re awed and amazed…

…to be celebrating one billion Firefox downloads. That’s one billion times in the last five years that you and the rest of the Mozilla community have made the choice to make the Web better.

The software has been on a continuous climbing since its release back in 2004 and currently it has reached, in terms of market share to 25-30 % in the browser industry (according to some reports). It follows the still predominant Internet Explorer which has about 60% of the market share but which, in fact, has seen a drop in popularity.

According to Mozilla, for the billion download milestone, have been taken into account all types of downloads of the browser, manual updates included. Multiple downloads from the same user were also counted.

File-Sharing Sites in Argentina Taken Down

file-sharing-sites-in-argentina-taken-downThe entertainment industry’s enforcers have begun targeting the copyright infringing sites operating in Latin America. As file-sharing site Qsound prepares to close its doors under IFPI’s (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) pressure, another two p2p (peer-to-peer) sites fall to the ground thanks to the noble efforts of the same trade group.

First to be shut down was Zona-mp3.com.ar, a site with about 11,000 users and listing more than 2,000 torrents (containing predominantly local rock music).Local labels organization CAPIF was probably alerted by the international organization and, in its turn notified and launched the request to the ISP.

The second ‘victim’ was Deathvalley.com.ar (bad augur that name well); it had around 30,000 members and offered mainly songs and albums by various international artists. Deathvalley had come into its short existence to replace another file sharing site shot dead – emep3.com.ar but it shared the latter’s fate as well.

The initial shock of the Pirate Bay being sold was followed over the last few days by the rumor of the exact opposite- that the deal is most likely dead and buried. The rumor was fueled by the departure of ex-Grokster CEO Wayne Rosso who had been hired to supervise the whole deal and who recently said that the GGF’s plans and business model have no future.

However, Hans Pandeya, Global Gaming Factory CEO, wanted to prove those allegations false and come forward with new statements meant to assure everybody that everything is going according to the original plan. He said that that the purchase of The Pirate Bay will happen as scheduled on August 27th.

“There are those who since day one wanted to ruin this deal,” said Pandeya. “They find it difficult to understand that the service will be lawful, therefore they are spreading rumors.”

To further shutter the rumors of a failure the company boldly announced that:

“A group of investors are prepared to inject 30 million [SEK] relating to the cash portion of the purchase price of The Pirate Bay at the date of acquisition. The company has also established its legalization plan and will execute it at the date of acquisition.”

Whether the deal will succeed or not most of the Pirate Bay fans are certain the real BitTorrent tracker with all its database has already transgressed elsewhere and will emerge more powerful than ever under a different name they will soon grow to love just as they did before.
