Two Weeks before Its Official Release, EA’s "The Sims 3" Leaks onto Torrents

When it comes to leaks, movie industry and record industry are not the only ones to be pointing at p2p networks in total discontentment for spoiling the big ‘cashing-in’ moment when a certain work is released officially. Game publishers find themselves in the same situation.

Electronic Arts have planned to release "The Sims 3" on June 2. However, the game (which is the best-selling game franchise ever, having sold more than 100 million copies of its different iterations and expansion packs worldwide) has made an early debut via file-sharing networks.

Instead of introducing an online authentication requirement to play the game ( as with "Spore"), the company preferred to add a serial code on the discs to protect against piracy.

This solution was chosen probably due to the heavy criticism (from gamers) EA was bombarded with previously when they decided to use more strict digital rights management (DRM).
