MPAA, DVD CCA Sued for Violating Antitrust Law
RealNetworks counterattacked on Thursday MPAA’s allegations that it was facilitating piracy by filing counterclaims against both six studios in the MPAA and the DVD Copy Control Association. The company accuses both organizations of breaking antitrust law by working together with the purpose of blocking legal alternatives to fair use copying of DVDs. In order to eliminate competitors who challenge their system copyrights permission is granted exclusively after a joint accord between all of the studios and the DVD CCA.
RealDVD says it acts in total compliance with the current copy protection with respect to making its copies of films. Moreover, the company says it includes additional protection to make sure the converted titles will not be made available on p2p networks. The procedure implies copying movies while still maintaining the CSS encryption the studios have added, to protect content from being pirated.
