BitTorrent Leads the Top of Copyright Infringements
Infringements go up in Europe and drop in U.S.
BayTSP’s annually survey on digital piracy published yesterday reveals some changes on the p2p scene. According to the study, BitTorrent has gained tremendous popularity as a p2p file sharing client and now rules the copyright infringement landscape as Spain, Italy and France have seen a high growth in infringements.
“BitTorrent and eDonkey are optimized for large file distribution and, despite the growing popularity of streaming video, are still where the majority of copyright infringement takes place,” according to BayTSP CEO Mark Ishikawa. “The U.S., which topped the list of countries with the most infringements in 2007, dropped to No. 4 behind Spain, Italy and France.”
The numbers speak for themselves – for example, ISPs like Comcast, AT&T and Road Runner each saw more than one million infringements of copyrighted material last year. Things get even heavier when t comes to the leading international ISPs. Top ranked ISPs like Telefonica De Espana (Spain), Telecom Italia (Italy) and France Telecom discovered more than two million such acts each.
“The report, “Online Trends & Insights – 2008”, is based on cumulative data from all of BayTSP’s clients, which include movie studios, sports franchises, pay-per-view broadcasters, record labels, software companies, videogame developers and the publishing industry.”
