Eircom Facing File-Sharing Lawsuit
Eircom, Ireland's leading broadband and content provider may be in some troubled waters as the Irish record industry is threatening them with a major lawsuit for allowing illegal music downloading, Independent.ie reports.
The recording labels have been complaining about a dramatic drop in sales (from about €150m in 2001 to nearly €90m in 2008) due to file sharing and massive illegal downloading of music.
It seems that Irma (The Irish Recorded Music Association) which has among primary objectives “fighting piracy in its every form in Ireland”, has acted against Eircom in the attempt to make it set up methods to stop piracy that its internet service facilitates.
Allegedly, Irma may have a plan B up its sleeve – in case Eircom fails to come up with the measures against file sharing they’ve demand, they have a €200m damages lawsuit ready to be filled.
