LimeWire Releases 5.0 Alpha
Many have been waiting for Limewire’s new move and I’m talking here about the version 5.0 alpha of the program which is finally out. Limewire is all about the survival of the fittest – it has proved it for almost a decade now. They’ve always managed to pull the rabbit from the hat but let’s see what about the release of their new baby. Alpha 5.0 introduces an entirely brand new UI, an integration of the Limewire store, support for private file sharing and chatting based on Jabber / XMPP and contextual text ads, and many other features.
To start with you don’t find any in-your-face graphics, no redundant features. This new version offers intuitiveness but spares the show-off gratuities. Although pretty important changes can be noticed, Limewire as we know it has not been altered.
A smart thing from Limewire was, for example, focusing on the balance between functional and visual – compared to some Vuze versions where users were overwhelmed by the content platform, Limewire users are first introduced to a splash screen with explanations regarding the new features. Another good thing is that search function was kept front and center in the new version.
Users will certainly appreciate 5.0 Alpha allowing them to share files with their friends. The client employs the Jabber / XMPP standard for this purpose and actually makes use of existing Jabber servers, which enables easy logging in through your GTalk, Jabber or Livejournal account.
A plus from the social networking feature, which builds a small and personalized environment for sharing, which users may also find attractive.
Let’s consider the times for a moment – BitTorrent is looking for its lost “innocence” and the few veterans like LimeWire, are fighting to gain stability on a shaky P2P scene. LimeWire seems to be doing OK in this department, due to its versatility and capacity of reinventing itself – it’s like Madonna of the p2p file sharing clients with high chances to remain the most popular such application.
