BitTorrent Teams Up with Oversi to Offer Optimal P2P Solution for ISPs
BitTorrent had its share of hard times lately and now it announces an agreement with Israeli content delivery company Oversi to cut back on the demand that P2P applications place on networks. The global standard technology for the delivery of rich media on the Internet intends to complement similar work from the P4P working group and IETF, which "intelligently" directs BitTorrent requests to the best peers, PRNewswire reports.
The deal employs new Policy Discover Protocols from BitTorrent as to query ISP capabilities and network architecture information. Oversi comes with its NetEnhancer box whose purpose is to "improve peer selection" using a method in accordance to the respective ISP, usually by having requests directed to local network peers first.
Eric Kinker, CEO of BitTorrent, was quoted as saying "We're glad to be cooperating with leading network equipment vendors like Oversi to build solutions that help network operators while preserving and even improving the end user experience on BitTorrent file transfers. We believe that cooperative endeavors like this offer the most promising opportunities for helping the Internet to evolve."
David Tolub, Oversi's President and CEO, pointed out the novelty this joint venture brings: "We welcome our collaboration with the global P2P technology leader. For the first time, network intelligence is being combined with P2P client intelligence to solve a key ISP dilemma: how to reduce network congestion while improving users' performance. This solution meets a real need, while reducing operational and capital expenses at a time of shrinking budgets".
Comcast made a recent announcement about the results of a real-world P4P trial that delivered improved performance, far less traffic leaving the network, and no considerable growth in upload congestion which troubles ISPs a lot.
