Finnish Teenagers Love Piracy

The National Research Institute of Legal Policy has recently released a study which reveals that nearly 70 percent of Finnish teenager have used or currently use file-sharing software to download unauthorized material.

This online crime seems to successfully get ahead of other criminal activities towards which youngsters are inclined - 6 % are (or have been) in the habit of smoking illegal substances, 11 % have been involved in fights, and 15 % have stolen different goods.

The record labels’ concern grows as 29 % of those who said they have illegally downloaded material over the Internet also “confessed” this is a daily activity for them.

AfterDawn quotes Finnish piracy supporting group Piraattiliitto as saying: “There is an almost unanimous call from the readers to legalize private filesharing. The overwhelming change in the national opinion from anti-piracy to pro-piracy is somewhat surprising, even for us at Piraattiliitto.”

We expect these results to put Finnish authorities on guard and tighten up the laws concerning copyright protection.
