Obama Leader of Top Malware Bait as well
Barack Obama's momentous election triumph didn’t go unexploited by the malware authors and a new flood of malware invaded the Web in the form of Trojan installers disguised as as audio and video clips of Tuesday evening's victory speech in Chicago.
It seems that a large number of the attacks implied attachments to spam messages or fake codec downloads. The subject lines preferred by attackers are apparently 'Obama's Win Reshapes the Race' and 'Obama Wouldn't Be First Black President'.
The scam goes like this: you are asked to download either an attached executable file or visit a bogus video site which will try to lure you into installing a malicious executable hidden under the appearance of Adobe Flash plug-in.
Symantec has revealed another way scammers operate – through a spam message that claims to offer an Obama DVD. Those who decide to buy the product are asked then to fill in bank account data which will be used, of course for fraudulent purpose.
"It does not matter if you are a Democrat or Republican, the American election remains a nonpartisan opportunity for malware writers to get into your computer using Barack Obama, John McCain or even Ralph Nader," McAfee researcher Pedro Bueno posted on a blog.
If you want to avoid fake codec attacks we strongly recommend you to download the plug-ins you want only from sites you trust or the vendor itself.
