Be a File Sharing Application Developer with Drop.io’s New API

Drop.io wants to win over a new segment of users. The file sharing service has just launched a new API that lets developers exploit most of the functions included in the site’s offering in their own applications. More precisely? You can allow users of your programs to use Drop.io’s storage – which currently is managed entirely via Amazon Web Services. Moreover, Drop.io’s different “input and output” functions which lay at the core of the company’s “Drops”, are also made available for utilization.

To those unfamiliar with this service, Drops are basically private webpages where anyone is able to make their own contribution to digital files and submit content using various methods such as phone (MPs) or fax (documents). The content in question can be shared afterwards via email, embeds, RSS, or using other ways.

However, don’t rush into believing you are going to quickly create a solid file sharing service thanks to Drop.io’s generosity ‘cause there may be some caveats you should be aware. In order to download the files, you are still required to go to the site, plus, there are limitations (on free accounts) of 100MB of storage. This means you’ll need to upgrade to a Drop.io premium account in order to develop any big project. Even so, Drop.io’s API makes a rather nit solution if you want to add file sharing to your apps, especially that its automatic managing of inputs/outputs can save developers precious time.
