Isohunt: When the Hunted Becomes the Hunter
Isohunt fights back and sues the CRIA
OK, first of all what is this CRIA anyway? Since you’re so familiar and loving of the RIAA, consider this group as its Canadian equivalent. However, now the CRIA is the accused (for a change) in a preemptive suit filed by torrent tracker Isohunt.
A few months ago, Isohunt founder Gary Fung had become a target of the other file sharing cop - the MPAA, but he maintained a noncompliant attitude: "I'm not building a business on the backs of others' works," he told David Kravets. "There are a lot of unprotected works as well."
That was only the beginning – Fung got the taste of it and later decided to counterattack the CRIA after the organization sent him a cease-and-desist in May, asking him to shut down the site. The CRIA also and threated to sue for $20,000 per song. Fung replied on Friday when he forwarded a petition for Declarative Relief in British Columbia that affirms Isohunt can’t be made guilty of copyright infringement. Furthermore, the founder wants to endorse the delicate and subtle attributes of torrents, which so far only those involved in the p2p communities seems able and willing to fully comprehend.
This is what Fung said in a statement to TorrentFreak: "We intend to take this all the way up to the Canadian Supreme Court, unless CRIA settles with us out of court in any reasonable way. There are some interesting parties in Canada in our camp I’m not disclosing yet, this is going to make an interesting case and the most important copyright case in Canada currently."
