RealDVD – A Solution to P2P Movie File Sharing?
The fuss around RealDVD software is partly due to it being promoted as a legitimate alternative to applications that rip DVD to unprotected formats such the popular MPEG or AVI which fill the file sharing sites and network (as they can be easily uploaded), and you can only imagine the irritation of the movie studios seeing their content distributed this way.
With RealDVD you can have legal backups of your DVD collection by including additional DRM protection designed to stop the uploading of copies to the Internet or burning a new copy onto a disk. This will limit you to just watching the DVD on your laptop or PC-connected home theater system.
The RealDVD software, scheduled for release this year, creates a backup copy of any DVD, at the same time maintaining all the menus and extra features. The program’s price will be set at $30 dollars and you will be also allowed to transfer the movie to up to 5 other machines paying $20 per license.
Probably this new software is going to attract particularly users that lack the technical knowledge to use the free apps and either own a computer-connected home theater or would like to watch movies on their laptops. Although it’s unlikely that this product will mean the end of films circulating on file-sharing networks, it may represent a great step forward for many home entertainment systems.
