BT ISP Throttles Indiscriminately
Samknows, a new hardware-based monitoring project, dedicated to tracking the roll out and progress of broadband across the UK, reports that the heavy BitTorrent users are no longer the only ones affected by BT throttling as the ISP in question has extended its practice to all of its broadband users. Apparently, the shaping is “preferred” at peak times during the day by the ISP because that’s when the most users are online, AfterDawn reports.
But that’s not all, Samknows informs, in the evenings, the "non-port 80 traffic" drops with as much as 15 percent even for the average users.
Samknows CEO Sam Crawford says, "Everyone knew that BT does traffic shaping. What's surprising is that they seem to do it to everyone."
Following the report’s release, a BT spokesperson confirmed the data but insisted to ensure that the shaping was only practiced with regard to peer-to-peer applications and would not interfere with streaming services like the iPlayer.
