SourceForge Awards Has P2P Applications Battling over Supremacy
As Slyck reports, two of the SourceForge Community Choice Awards regular awardees Vuze (P2P client formerly known as Azureus) and eMule which back in 2006/2007, won "Best Overall"/"Most Collaborative Project", respectively "Best Overall" runner up/"Best New Project", get to walk on the red carpet in 2008 as well.
This year SourceForge decided to make it all a bit spicier and took the liberty to play a little with the categories (however, Vuze and eMule are on the list once again).
Azureus can brag about getting its name in a pretty envied category - "Most Likely to Be the Next $1B Acquisition". Vuze has been busy switching from the Azureus title in 2007, and getting their new version out in the open. This fresh facelift of Vuze comes with two important changes: the ability to search torrent sites and the ability to share torrents with your buddies. This move from Azureus to Vuze seems to have a big stake behind. The company aims at closing a “fat”distribution deal with the entertainment industry.
Quite an absence this year from "Best New Project" is eMule but if we think about for a second and do a little math, 7 years of existence it’s a long time, enough to exclude the project. Still, eMule managed to qualify for two somewhat awkward awards. Firstly, it was nominated by The SourceForge community as "Most Likely to Be Accused of Patent Violation" and secondly, as "Most Likely to Get Users Sued". However, eMule doesn’t risk to feel lonely in these categories as other similar applications share this burden with it. For instance, 7-Zip, OpenOffice, IM client Pidgin are gloriously joining eMule in the former category while in the latter, eMule had some other “friends” coming to the party - Azureus, DC++, and Shareaza .
We’re still far from telling for sure the winners. Until July 25th when they will be announced voting is still on.
