Mozilla's Firefox 3 Record Confirmed by Guinness

Mozilla got that record after all. The company announced this week that the figure for its Firefox 3 browser's launch date reached an amazing 8,002,530, setting an official Guinness World Record for the most downloaded software in a day.

GWR judges validated this never-tried-before record on Wednesday. The downloads were counted after a thorough inspection and checking of the servers to make sure no duplicates or incomplete downloads were included in the final figure.

"As the arbiter and recorder of the world's amazing facts, Guinness World Records is pleased to add Mozilla's achievement to our archives," Guinness World Records manager Gareth Deaves announced.

However, with all these impressive figures marching, plus owning a 19 percent market share of total web browser usage, Microsoft's Internet Explorer remains the undisputable leader with an overwhelming 73 percent share, as said by stats tracker Net Applications.

There’s also a security issue here - According to security firms DV Labs and Tipping Point, Firefox 3 didn’t yet get rid of a weak point that might give hackers the possibility to mess with a user's computer.

On the same day the open source developer promised that the shortcoming is being worked on. Mozilla has also come out with patches for 13 bugs in previous version Firefox 2, five of which are reported as "critical".

Mozilla strongly recommends users of Firefox 2 that they should upgrade to version 3. The company announced that support for version 2 will only go as far as mid-December.
