Virgin Media Drops the Ball

Virgin Media's noble campaign to educate file-sharers might have back fired a little. After Virgin Media teamed up with the BPI in an attempt with an educational purpose aimed at alleged illegal file sharers, it started to send warning letters on behalf of the BPI. Still, Virgin told the Internet community that no "three strikes" policy leading to disconnection was included in its approach.

Hence the shock of 800 receivers at being given a letter from Virgin Media reading: "Important. If you don't read this, your broadband could be disconnected". BBC's Newsbeat has got into the story and points out to the state of disappointment customers of Virgin Media are now experiencing due to the company’s readiness towards cooperation with the BPI.

Virgin realized the possible loss of credibility and quickly came forward with an explanation (spokesman Asam Ahmad declared to Newsbeat) saying that what had been written on the envelops was a "mistake".

Afterwards, the company assured that no customer will be disconected, sued, or somehow negatively affected by the ongoing campaign. We can’t diminish the role of an educational endeavor such as this but the fact that it promised one thing and ended up nearly doing the opposite has cost Virgin Media greatly with respect to its image among its subscribers.
