QTrax Makes Deal with EMI but Where's the P2P?
Qtrax has reached an agreement with EMI which next to Universal will enable users to download free music in a pro-ad milieu.
Despite what you might call Qtrax's hearty motto – "the world's first free and legal P2P music download network" – peer-to-peer is not yet the major issue to be covered in this arrangement which fails to resemble what Qtrax had us expect.
In brief – the companies have shaken hands upon a device designed to facilitate Qtrax's P2P features and which is now in stand by.
The agreement covers all EMI's digital music has been given green light for subscription services. As Qtrax's contract with EMI publishing wing is still on, EMI's full digital music catalog is officially cleared for the site. According to Qtrax, almost all Universal's digital catalog has been incorporated and it shouldn’t take long until the same happens to EMI's list of songs. After that the music will be made available (for free) to Windows users who will be able to download and transfer it to Microsoft subscription mobile machines that support DRM, and to other users to stream (a Mac version of the downloadable program is allegedly being developed).
According to Wired.com the offer Qtrax will have for us in the close future will mainly include "legitimate" tunes (licensed material that labels and publishers made available through a subscription service). It seems that in what concerns live and rare tracks or music that will be off the license we’ll just have to extend our patience.
The site reads:
We will be enabling free and legal downloads soon. Please be sure to register and create your Qtrax account when you launch the player. Thanks for your patience.
