Internet Crime Investigators Suspected of Online Piracy
Do as I say not as I do is an everlasting reality - it was proved again by two German policemen whose main field was investigating online crimes and who apparently have turned from hunter into hunted. The irony is that the reason for being investigated is in their case…the same - Internet piracy.
After their apartments were subjects to a raid a large number of CDs and DVDs was confiscated (as the Austrian Newspaper Der Standard informs). However, what exactly is on those disks was not yet disclosed. It seems that the two police officers became suspects in the investigation due to one of the coworkers turning them in.
This comes no longer as a surprise as other cases incriminating German anti-piracy militants have been reported. For instance, a lawyer implicated in a lawsuit against alleged offenders that were - some of them inadvertently - selling copy protection circumvention applications using Ebay was given 10 months on probation in 2007 for his activities connected to a paid warez FTP server enterprise. According to the German computer magazine c't the anti-piracy organization GVU was involved some time ago in funding the hosting costs of a warez server in return for information concerning the scene.
