'Ono' - New Azureus Plugin Said to Accelerate Download Speeds by 883% (!)

Azureus-logo.jpgONO.jpgInnovative plugin employs CDN info to proactively find nearby peers, making possible a better response time and a considerable boost of the download speeds.

There’s no such thing as enough download speed, it seems, as BitTorrent community always proves through its constant search of methods to enhance it. On one hand are common ways to do it such as proper configuration and port forwarding and on the other hand are some more questioning ones like, let’s say, BitTyrant.

According to ZeroPaid two researchers at Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science have come up with a new means to speed up the BitTorrent transfer. Fabián E. Bustamante, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and Ph.D. student David Choffnes, together developed Ono - a plugin for the Azureus BitTorrent client.

Allegedly, the peers closest to you are identified by means of reprocess network measurements from content distribution networks (CDNs).

The AquaLab research group explains how Ono (which translates in Hawaiian as " good to eat”) is able to achieve improved download speed:

AquaLab.jpgUsing results collected from our participating users (well over 100,000 of them!), we have found that our system locates peers along paths that have two orders of magnitude lower latency and 30% lower loss rates than those picked at random by BitTorrent, and that these high-quality paths can lead to significant improvements in transfer rates. In challenged settings where peers are overloaded in terms of available bandwidth, Ono provides a 31% average download-rate improvement; in environments with large available bandwidth, Ono increases download rates by 207% on average (and improves median rates by 883%).

Of course, what catches the eye most is this number - 883%- referring to improvement of median rates…no need for comment there.

They also encourage people to use the plug-in as to guarantee a better performance of the system and in this respect they’re " just trying make it easy to spread."
