Innovative Technology to Download Video

The Jerusalem Post reports that a possible great solution in the help of both ISPs and, of course, their customers is at hand. “Responsible” for this is the Israeli start-up PeerApp, which has succeeded in developing a system which spares ISPs of bearing the burden of video downloading on their own - and instead shifts it onto a video cache server. The latter operates similarly to the traditional Web cache server. PeerApp.jpg

Rather than directly connecting to servers worldwide so as to download pages, Web browsers access cached copies of updated Web pages available on cache servers.

As said by PeerApp CFO Yossi Hazan, PeerApp is able to do the same thing with video downloads: "Today, about 60% of ISP traffic is dedicated to video streaming and downloading, including from sources like YouTube, file sharing, and streaming personal or proprietary video,"

Moreover, the quality of streaming video is also improved, due to the "presence" of fewer "gaps" which would interfere with the flow of the video owing to slow downloading of segments. Apparently, the method guarantees to be on the liking of both ISPs and customers.

Besides that, the start-up does not overlook the interest of the content holder -"What is unique about PeerApp is that we keep a live link between the customer's computer and the content owners," Hazan states.

PeerApp-diagram.jpgOn one hand there’s P2P, especially BitTorrent protocol files, standing out with their bad name as "instruments" suited for pirates only, on the other there are more and more legitimate P2P services which have begun to distribute authorized videos. Further on Hazan explains that PeerApp's innovative video caching system maintains whatever security or digital rights rules were set up by the Web site offering the file.

If you’re already asking yourself how good is really PeerApp, well, we can only say that it seems to be good enough for Pando, which manages the downloads of streaming video on the NBC.com Web site. PeerApp has joined forces with them to make sure that users fond of watching video on the site will enjoy a total experience uninterrupted by any network interference.
