Limewire enters the digital music business
Limewire tries the download store approach. Though many don’t see this as a real successful move, the company has recently launched its download store having a catalog which includes 500.000 DRM-free MP3s encoded at 256 kbps. A single track costs 99 Cent. The offer also includes a subscription model somewhat similar to that of Emusic, with plans starting at 9.99 per month for 25 downloads. The best plan seems to be "platinum" which allows you 75 downloads for 19.99 ( which means that the price of each track drops to 27 cent).
Limewire download store offering:
It seems that for the moment Limewire's store doesn’t come incorporated into the Limwire client. They say that "In the future, LimeWire will be releasing a version of our file-sharing software optimized for integration with the Music Store. Stay tuned!"
For now only the US-based music fans can enjoy the store, but an international version is considered.
Limewire's recent emerging into the digital music business is largely similar to what the Amazon MP3 store or Emusic have to offer, but the company stated that they want to integrate context-based links into the client itself to give people who are searching for a certain song the possibility to purchase it. So far we can only speculate about what kind of changes this will bring.
